There are many signs of an abusive relationship, but the most tell-tale sign is fear. If you are afraid of your partner, chances are that you may be in an abusive relationship. There are many additional signs that include isolation, humiliation, hopelessness, and the feeling of "being crazy."

To determine if your relationship is abusive, answer the questions below. The more you answer 'yes' to these questions, the more likely it is that you are in an abusive relationship.

Does your partner....
  • Try to control where you go, what you do, and who you spend your time with?
  • Constantly check up on you?
  • Discourage or prohibit you from spending time with your friends and family?
  • Hide controlling behavior by pretending to be concerned about your safety or well-being?
  • Act jealous and possessive?
  • Humiliate or yell at you (privately or publicly)?
  • Have sudden, drastic mood swings?
  • Hurt or threaten to hurt you?
  • Threaten to kill you?
  • Threaten to spread rumors or tell others private information about you?
  • Threaten to take your children away or hurt them?
  • Threaten to harm or kill your loved ones?
  • Destroy your property?
  • Force you to have sex with them?
  • Force you do engage in illegal activity?
  • Tell you that they will commit suicide?
  • Blame you for their abusive behavior?
  • Use drugs or alcohol to excuse their abusive behavior?
