What is Sexual Violence?

 

Basic Definitions

  • Sexual Violence is the use of words and/or actions of a sexual nature that are unwanted by and/or harmful to another person.
  • Some of these actions are defined as crimes by Minnesota statute and some are not. However, with sexual violence, the experience is hurtful to the victim.
  • The term sexual violence can be used interchangeably with the terms sexual abuse and sexual assault

  • Drug Facilitated Sexual Abuse
  • Child Sexual Abuse

  • Clergy Sexual Misconduct
  • Ritual Sexual Abuse

Who are the Victims of Sexual Violence?

 

Sexual Assault can happen to anyone:

  • Women
  • Men
  • Children
  • Elderly

Where does Sexual Violence Occur?

 

Sexual Assault can happen anywhere. Around 50% of all sexual assaults take place in the victim's home or a private residence. Many victims are assaulted in a car, in the woods, or at a school function.

What should you do if you have been Sexually Abused?

 
  • Get to a safe place immediately.
  • Call one of our crisis line numbers.
  • Seek medical attention as soon as possible.
  • Do not change your clothes, douche, bathe, or shower. This will help authorities collect evidence to convict your abuser.

Sexual Violence Statistics

 
  • In America, someone is sexually assaulted every two minutes.
  • 84% of sexual assault victims know the offender.
  • Offenders can be relatives, intimate partners, friends, acquaintances, or strangers.
  • 1 in 4 girls will have been sexually assaulted before the age of 18 .
  • 1 in 6 boys will have been sexually assaulted by the age of 18.
  • The average age of entry into prostitution is 14 years old.
  • In 90 percent of child sexual abuse cases, the child knows and trusts the person who commits the abuse.
  • 88% of sexual abuse is never reported.
  • More than 90 percent of offenders are male
  • More than 85 percent of victims are female.

Services for Victims in McLeod, Renville, and Swift Counties

 

If you or someone you know has been sexually assaulted, we can help.

First, you need to know it was not your fault. No one asks to be sexually assaulted.

The Shelter House provides trained advocates who are available 24 hours a day to take your calls, listen to you and help you. Here are some of the ways they will help:

 

  • Advocates offer support in reporting the assault to the police if you report the assault.
  • Advocates can assist victims in the emergency room at the hospital if medical attention is needed. It is important to get medical attention to treat injuries, or check for potential sexually transmitted diseases, AIDS, pregnancy, or any other concerns one may have.
  • Provide legal advocacy.
  • Help victims obtain rights and reparations available to them.
  • Provide education on sexual violence issues.
  • Convene weekly support group meetings for adult survivors of sexual assault.
  • Provide referrals to other agencies who can provide other services.
